Gafta is the largest trade association in the world dealing with trade in agricultural products. It represents over 1,100 grain companies and related businesses throughout Canada. Gafta's members process more than 40 million tonnes of grain annually, worth about $30 billion, accounting for 80 percent of Canada's total value-added grain exports and one third of Canadian farm income.
In addition to providing information on global markets and trends, Gafta also provides a forum for its members to discuss issues facing them today. For example, as a result of climate change there are concerns that some parts of Canada may not be able to grow certain crops anymore because they're simply too hot or too wet (or both). With this knowledge at hand Gafta has developed strategies for coping with these challenges so that farmers don't have to give up farming altogether just because it doesn't work anymore in their region due to climate change.
